Log-book and papers : of William Porter Cave, 1844-1863.

Log-book, 1844-1846, kept by Cave as Master on board the ship St. Mark on a voyage from Savannah, Ga., to Liverpool, Eng. with a cargo of cotton, 1844 Oct. 10-Nov. 16; and on the return voyage, 1844 Nov 30-1845 Jan. 18, with potatoes as part of the cargo. Cave took cotton to New York, 1845 March 5-14, and returned, 1845 March 22-April 3, with a cargo of hay. He voyaged again to New York, 1846 March 30-April 10, with 6 passengers and cargo. Letter, 1850 February 16, Shanghai, ship Tavolenta, to his wife, Bella Cave, Orange Court House, Va., mentioning loading a general cargo for the U.S.; tells his wife to send their son to the University of Virginia if he fails to enter West Point. The collection also includes a bond, 1863 March 2, of the C.S.A. for $500 and paper currency 1853-1862, of various denominations, chiefly Confederate.
